Accessibility

How voteinwi.com is built to work for everyone, and how to tell me when it doesn't.

I want everyone to be able to use this site, including people who use a screen reader, keyboard, magnifier or voice control. The goal is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, level AA.

What I've checked

  • Every type of page, on desktop and phone screens, with the axe-core automated checker against the WCAG 2.2 A and AA rules. Nothing failed after one fix: the ad ledger table, which scrolls sideways on phones, can now be reached with the keyboard.
  • Every link, button and form field can be reached with the Tab key and shows a clear focus outline. The first stop on each page is a link that skips straight to the content.
  • Pages fit a screen 320 pixels wide, about the same as zooming to 400%, without scrolling sideways.
  • Text colors meet AA contrast. Each state's colors are checked every time the site is built.
  • Animations turn off when your device is set to reduce motion.
  • Pages declare their language, and every form field has a label.

Known problems

  • I haven't yet tested the site myself with a screen reader such as NVDA, JAWS or VoiceOver. That's next.
  • Meeting agendas and minutes are on county and school district websites, often as PDFs. Their accessibility depends on those offices.

Other sites

Many links go to official government sites. I can't fix problems on those sites, but if one blocks you from something you need, tell me and I'll look for another official route.
